Young Lit + Phil
The Young Lit + Phil is a project that will rejuvenate not only the historic Lit + Phil society, but also the area surrounding the site, which is itself the site of a disused train station. The proposal aims to create a space that will draw new members to the Lit + Phil and will allow the society to continue to share knowledge and information in a new environment. The new library extension will house a specialist collection focusing on the work of George Stephenson and the industrial and transport history of Newcastle. The extension will be built to last, with the aim to have it share the extended life span of the original Lit + Phil building. The client wishes to create a space that will draw visitors of all ages for multiple activities
including studying, socializing and visiting temporary exhibits housed within the extension. There is a strong emphasis on the social aspects and sharing of knowledge within the society, which will be incorporated into the design wherever possible to carry the ethos of the Lit + Phil society into the modern extension.

The grid was extended from the car park and the site boundaries throughout the site. The angles created went on to influence the form of the building and allowed it to sit comfortably within the site surrounded by various other buildings.
