Frame

As a means to inspire and inform the development of the Frame studies, compare and contrast 1 of 12 artists identified in the brief, with an additional artist.

Form a frame through which a chosen subject can be viewed. The frame will form the viewing aperture and the boundary of the drawn studies.

1. Create a series of three studies focusing on the same subject at three distances- 1m, 5m and 10m from the focal point.

Descriptive Text:

Focusing on Kiefer and Turner pieces, I worked to combine and contrast the styles of the two artists. The dark, heavy work after Kiefer dominates the shadows in the frame as the lighter, gentler work after Turner’s watercolours fills the light that enters the space through the two openings captured in the frames.

The first shows part of an opening against the darkest shadows in the frame as the following pieces gradually introduce more depth and variations in the light that occupies the space. The frame is overlooking a double height space so light is the only thing that can occupy the upper level space that is seen in the second and third frames.

The pieces further contrast the textures achieved by Kiefer alongside the flat finish created by watercolours. The textures were achieved by layering acrylic, scraping away at the layers to create relief the sits beside the flat plane filled only with watercolour.
