The mausoleum currently stands as an open historic ruin. It can be assumed the solid stone structure is stable, but not capable of withstanding any additional substantial load. The Mausoleum is “Grade 1 Listed”, however to achieve an appropriate solution, it would be appropriate to make small scale, elegant alterations and interventions.
Consideration should be given to the quality, atmosphere and flexibility of the theatre or performance space. To be capable of hosting a range of productions (and given it’s size) the seating arrangements and the staging areas should offer simplicity and flexibility but still provide all the technical requirements and facilities required of a small contemporary performance space.
The volume of the existing Mausoleum will not be sufficient to contain the requirements of the brief so during the design process consideration must be given to the design, placing and function of additional structures. How these new additions relate to the existing building is of significant importance.
The theatre must allow front-of-house services including; performance space, control booth, ticketing office and cloakroom, bar area and toilets.
It must also allow back-of-house services including; dressing area, equipment stores, cast and crew toilets and showers.
We were tasked to create a final design proposal documenting our work via a number of means:
1. A written introduction to the scheme (no more than 50 words)
2. One concept diagram or sketch
3. One diagram that communicates the spatial strategy
4. 1:50 Hand drawn floor plans of all levels
5. One 1:50 full height detailed section
6. 1:200 contextual site plan that communications the function of the external spaces
7. One internal perspective
8. One external perspective
